There's a reason Phil Mickelson doesn't fight. Just look at him. All kidding aside, it's probably more of a socioeconomic thing to explain why some athletes are drawn to golf and others choose to fight. The two worlds came together on Monday during a charity golf tournament in Northern California. Strikeforce fighters hit the links to raise money for Turning Wheels for Kids. The cause collected funds to get underprivileged kids bicycles. Former fighter and Showtime announcer Frank Shamrock explained nicely:
"Here's what I remember about being a kid. I was on welfare, I was poor and I stole every bike I every got," joked Shamrock on this cool video (NSFW).
"Because it was the only way I could get out of my house and get out into my community. A bike is the tool to connect to your community. What we do with Turning Wheels is we give that connection and we give him a bike. We show him there's a different way."
Strikeforce fighters Scott Smith, Daniel Cormier, Josh Thomson and Luke Rockhold were on hand along with Shamrock and CEO Scott Coker.
Cormier needs a little work on his game. The rising heavyweight prospect almost killed a few dummies who parked in front of a tee. With that swing, he might be better suited for some rooftop golf with the head honchos from the UFC. Smith hit some nice shots and there was a even a dreaded media guy, Greg Savage, showing off a slight bit of athletic aptitude (1:10 mark).

Brock Lesnar was mauled by Cain Velasquez on Saturday and now some bloggers and fans are questioning his desire to be a fighter. Are they onto something? He's split his last two fights but took a vicious beating in both. The money could be bigger back in wrestling for Lesnar. Maybe Lesnar's having second thoughts about MMA? These assertions all seemed ridiculous until "The Undertaker" from the WWE pulled his little stunt on Saturday night.
UPDATE: TMZ spoke with UFC president Dana White, who threw cold water over all the rumors:
Despite an intense standoff between Lesnar and Undertaker at UFC 121 this weekend -- in which Undie challenged Brock to a fight -- UFC president Dana White tells us, "Brock Lesnar is still under contract with the UFC ... he is not going to wrestle in the WWE. He cannot wrestle, box or fight anywhere else."
The WWE star broke from an Octagon-side interview (0:43 mark) to challenge Lesnar as he walked back to the locker-room. The short confrontation has got the wrestling world buzzing. Now there are rumors that the WWE wants to or has made a big offer for the former UFC champ to return at Wrestlemania 27 in April.
Yahoo! Sports' Dave Meltzer is a longtime pro wrestling observer and he just doesn't believe a Lesnar return to WWE in 2011 is possible for several reasons.
Jonathan Kamis from the O.C. Register said that White had some issues with Lesnar after the fight. It couldn't have been over this, right?

Matt Hamill pulled out a big win with a unanimous decision over former UFC champ Tito Ortiz. Hamill won 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 on the judges' cards at UFC 121 in Anaheim on Saturday.
In the first round, Hamill was able to take Ortiz down briefly, but could not do anything on the ground. The stand-up part of the round was filled with high leg kicks from both fighters and Ortiz moving forward throughout the round. Though the stand-up battle was close, Ortiz suffered more damage, sustaining a large cut on the side of his head and a mouse underneath his eye.
Hamill was able to inflict more damage in the second round. After getting a takedown, Hamill punished Ortiz with elbows from the top. Ortiz tried to answer with a submission attempts, but Hamill just took advantage of him and threw more short elbows.
After slow stand-up in the third and final round, Hamill tried to return to the takedown, but Ortiz stuffed it the first time, but easily took Ortiz to the ground on the second attempt. Hamill used side control to wear down Ortiz and land big hammer fists on Ortiz's hard-to-miss head.
Hamill was emotional after the fight, thanking his old coach and saying that he was honored to even fight Ortiz. Ortiz was Hamill's coach on "The Ultimate Fighter," and Hamill used Ortiz's style to beat his old mentor. The ground and pound strategy worked well for Hamill, who has now won five fights in a row.
Ortiz's next steps are not clear, as he has not won a fight since he beat Ken Shamrock in 2006. The one-time dominant champ is on a bad losing streak, and missed his chance to right the ship with this bout.

Happy Halloween from Cagewriter, everybody! Just as Dr. Frankenstein created a man from disparate body parts, we've created a fighter with the best of every fighter out there. Consider a fighter with:
-- The legs of Jose Aldo: He may be tiny, but his legs are powerful. He showed that first in a flying knee TKO of Cub Swanson, then again by battering Urijah Faber's legs with low kicks for five rounds.
-- The strength of Brock Lesnar: Say what you want about his fighting -- and his distaste of getting hit -- the man still is incredibly strong. He used it to his advantage against Shane Carwin, Frank Mir and Randy Couture.
-- The chin (but not the belly) of Roy Nelson: Though he lost, "Big Country" withstood a ton of punishing blows from Junior dos Santos in his last bout. Unlike Lesnar, the man can take a punch.
-- The movement of Dominick Cruz: The WEC bantamweight champ is exciting for fans, maddening for opponents. He is constantly moving, moving, moving around the cage, making him incredibly difficult to hit, much less hit well.
-- The brain of Cain Velasquez: How did he beat Brock Lesnar and win the UFC heavyweight belt? With a smart game plan. He looked at how other fighers have failed with Lesnar, learned from it, and figured out the best way to win.
-- The hips of Ben Askren: In his win over Lyman Good for the Bellator welterweight championship last week, Askren showed off the balance and skill he honed after years of wrestling at an elite level. Every time Askren seemed to be in a bad position, he used hip control and balance to get out of it.
-- The arms of Jon Jones: Between his long reach and lethal elbows, Jones' arms are weapons in and of themselves. Brandon Vera and Matt Hamill can both attest to what it feels like to be on the wrong end of a Jones elbow.
How would you create the perfect fighter?

The prefight hype job is done. The fellas weighed-in earlier today. The time is almost here to see the next in Brock Lesnar's evolution as an MMA fighter. At the weigh-in, he looked leaner. Imagine a faster Lesnar, who may be more comfortable on his feet. That's a scary proposition.
When he first hit the big stage with the UFC, Cain Velasquez was touted as the future of the division. His chance to take out the massive UFC heavyweight champ has arrived. Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole was one of the first media members to jump on the Cain train. Is he still as confident in Velasquez as he gets ready to step in with the monster? Iole gives his analysis of the main event, the lead-in fights and lists a couple of upset possibilities from the undercard in Anaheim.
Yahoo's coverage of UFC 121 officially begins at 8 p.m. ET with special preview show that includes host Dave Farra speaking with Yahoo! writers Iole, Dave Meltzer and Dave Doyle plus fighters Vitor Belfort and Urijah Faber. Famed 90's rap star MC Hammer will be on the show as well with Skyscrape from TapouT. Watch here.

As was first reported by MMA Fighting, the UFC and the WEC will merge in January 2011. The WEC will have its two scheduled events, Urijah Faber vs. Takeya Mizugaki in Las Vegas on Nov. 11 and Ben Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis in Arizona on Dec. 16. After that, the fighters will be rolled into the UFC.
Henderson, the WEC lightweight champion, texted with Cagewriter after the news broke. He gave a simple reaction: :-). He couldn't be happier about the news that not only will the UFC and WEC merge, but that the winner of his bout with Pettis will fight the winner of Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar for the UFC lightweight belt.
"I'm very excited. Now the major goal is to go over there wearing a belt," Henderson said. "To be the best and make that claim, you've gotta beat the best. I want to take that one step further and beat not only the best, but everyone so there's no doubt."
His opponent on Dec. 16, Anthony Pettis, is just as excited about the merger.
"When I heard about it, I was finishing up my morning training session, and I wanted to go right back to the gym and train," Pettis told Cagewriter. "My fight with Ben was big enough, and now I'm two fights away from being the UFC champion. It's two championships in two fights."
He said he will always be grateful for his beginnings with the WEC.
"I look at it like college, and now I'm going to the NBA, and it just so happens that I'm the first-round draft pick. The UFC is where I want to be."
Henderson and Pettis both said they had no idea that the merger was coming, which was echoed by other fighters. Cagewriter broke the news to bantamweight Scott Jorgensen, who will fight Dominick Cruz for the title in December, and lightweight Anthony Njokuani, who will battle Edward Faaloloto in November.
"I think I'm going to be a UFC champion come January 1! I didn't even know what happened, I was asleep. I had a missed call from my manager and a text from you," Jorgensen told Cagewriter. He also said that he is looking forward to being exposed to a whole new audience, who will love his style of fighting.
"I don't put on dull fights," Jorgensen said. "The fact that we're on the UFC stage means that I get to show more people how exciting and how tough I really am. Every UFC fan that wasn't a WEC fan will become my fan now."
Njokuani didn't have any specific UFC fighter that he wanted to call out. He was just happy about the news.
"Oh, hell yeah. I'm ecstatic," he told Cagewriter. "There's nobody. Whoever I go up against, I'm just using that person to show the world what I've got."

All fighters feel a sense of urgency but with today's announcement that the WEC's roster is folding into the UFC, the final two WEC cards will be pressure packed. Yahoo! Sports Kevin Iole says in the short run with a few less cards on the schedule mid-level fighters up and down the UFC/WEC roster will be under the gun to win.
The increased roster depth now makes it easier for the UFC to pitch new shows to existing or new networks. If you're a fighter, you just have to win to keep yourself in the mix for what could be on the horizon in 2011.
Some of the key pressure fights at WEC 52 include:
Raphael Assuncao v. L.C. Davis
Assuncao has lost two straight which puts the Brazilian at risk. LC Davis needs a win to erase the bad taste of getting choked out by Josh Grispi.
Anthony Njokuani v. Edwards Faaloloto
At the start of 2010, Njokuani was on the fast track to a title shot at 155 pounds. His weak takedown defense did him in against Shane Roller and even more surprising he was beat on the feet by newcomer Maciej Jewtuszko. A third straight loss, especially against a WEC newcomer could be devastating to his future.
Cub Swanson v. Mackens Sermerzier
Swanson has toiled in obscurity for a while and would love nothing better than the big stage in UFC. He's been rotating between winning and losing. He needs a win here. The same goes for Sermerzier, who's on a two-fight losing streak.

Though the City of Brotherly Love may be focused on how the Phillies are faring in the playoffs, Philadelphia's fight fans have a treat with Bellator in town. In the second-to-last card of the season, Bellator will award a championship belt, and host the bout it likely expected when it signed Roger Huerta.
With lightweight tournament champ Pat Curran injured, Philadelphia's own Eddie Alvarez will face Huerta in a non-title bout. This will be the third bout for Alvarez since winning the Bellator lightweight belt, but he has yet to defend the belt.
Though a belt isn't on the line, Huerta called this fight "the biggest fight of his career."
"He's kind of [going to] bring me back from the dead, almost," Huerta said in a Bellator press call. "He's going to bring the best out in me."
That's exactly what Huerta needs, considering that he's lost three of his last four bouts.
Lyman Good will put his welterweight title on the line when he meets up with Season 2 welterweight tournament champion Ben Askren. Though Askren was an Olympian in 2008 and a two-time national champion wrestler at the University of Missouri, Good said that he's ready for Askren's wrestling, having worked with with Kurt Pellegrino on takedown defense. He also stepped up the focus on his cardio.
"I've been working purely on my conditioning as well, using a lot of the time I've had since I last fought, not so much that I had a specific weakness that I was worried about, but you've got to ask yourself, in contrast to your opponent, what are their strengths, what are their weaknesses?" Good said. "It's clear what Askren's are, so I've been working on my takedown defense and wrestling, but especially my cardio, which pays dividends when it comes to a fight, especially a five-rounder."
Bellator will air on FOX Sports. Check your local listings to see when it will air in your area.

UFC president Dana White was profiled in Dubs, a magazine that covers car culture. He talks about his two Ferraris -- apparently, they're way better than Lamborghinis -- and a Barracuda, but says that his every day car is his Range Rover.
Good news! If you have $95,000 sitting around, you too can drive like Dana. Well, maybe you don't want to drive exactly like Dana. He did beat up the Lamborghini last November when driving around Las Vegas, and we've seen how erratic his driving can be in video blogs. He also hasn't always had the best of luck with Range Rovers, as the model that the UFC bought Dan Henderson for coaching "The Ultimate Fighter" broke down on the former UFC fighter. Strikeforce develops its future stars on its Challengers shows. Three months back, Sarah Kaufman came up big with a win over Roxanne Modafferi to move up Strikeforce's shows on Showtime. Las night, it was time for Roger Bowling and Lavar Johnson to land that signature win that'd get them the call up. Johnson came through with a KO finish of Virgil Zwicker while Roger Bowling showed he needs a little more seasoning during a loss to Bobby Voelker.
Early in the fight, the 6-foot-4, 251-pound Johnson had to deal with the speed of Zwicker. He took some good licks - leg kicks and some straight rights - before unloading on the smaller heavyweight. Ninety seconds into the first, with little regard for Zwicker's power, the big man began to swing for the fences. After some huge uppercuts, Zwicker crumbled to the mat. Johnson didn't have to throw another shot in getting his third Challenger Series win at 2:17 of the first.
"I hit him hard a few times but he was in it for the fight. He made it a good fight," said Johnson.
Johnson (15-3) said he's ready for the step up to Showtime's main cards.
"I'm ready for the big show. I want to chase down some of those big name guys and see if I have what it takes or not. I'm not afraid of an ass whuppin'," said Johnson.
Johnson, 33, mentioned names like Andrei Arlovski and Brett Rogers.
Bowling (8-1) looked awesome early in his fight. His speed overwhelmed Voelker but he got a little left hook happy. Voelker lost the first but started to time that Bowling leaping left hook. Voelker had Bowling missing badly in the opening minutes of the second and fired back with some hard shots. That's when Bowling went for a takedown. It got stuffed and instead of scrambling back to his feet, Bowling sat there on all fours allowing Voelker to tee off. He landed six huge shots and it was downhill from there for Bowling.
Bowling got back to his feet but then tried another sloppy takedown that was thwarted. Voelker got top control and never relinquished it. He stayed busy with punches and hammerfists. Bruised and bloodied on his face, Bowling eventually covered up and turned to his side. The referee had to save him giving Voelker (23-8) the win at 3:58 of the second.

On the surface, Dana White wouldn't appear to have much in common with the students at Oxford. Coming from a middle class background in South Boston and Las Vegas, he's a brash, in-your-face type of guy. White, a former amateur boxer, who has helped to re-invent the fight business. Just before he spoke to the Oxford Union, White said he'd already seen lots of fighters on campus.
"Some of the kids I met here today, these guys are animals. These guys are ambitious," White told The Telegraph's Gareth A. Davies (5:15 mark). "I think a lot of people look (at these students) on the outside and think 'oh, Oxford yuppies.' These guys are animals, man. You don't want to go toe-to-toe with half the kids who go to this school."
White says anyone who wants to get ahead in life has to have that fighting spirit.
"I believe you're in a fight everyday. I don't care what you're doing, you're in there fighting for something everyday," said White. "Everyone who even has this much [holds his fingers close together] ambition is in a fight everyday."
White said speaking at Oxford was one of his prouder moments. He joined quite the list of dignitaries who've spoken there in the past. In 1964, Malcolm X Shabazz also spoke to the Oxford Union about the need to fight.

They're both badly in need of more attention from casual fight fans and with no other major action on the schedule this week, Hector Lombard and Megumi Fujii get to take centerstage. A powerful middleweight on the male side and the woman some call the best pound-for-pound in the world, fight at Bellator 34 on Thursday night.
Lombard (27-2-1) could be on the verge of exploding into the mainstream. Without a loss since late 2006, he's got it all. The Cuban certainly looks like a fighter with a thick build that would stack up against most NFL running backs. Lombard also hits the cage with a killer instinct. His last two fights, wins over Herbert Goodman and Jay Silva, lasted a combined 44 seconds. Remember Silva had just gone the distance in a pair of UFC fights against Chris Leben and C.B. Dollaway.
The 32-year-old has a special pedigree having competed for Cuba's Judo squad at the 2000 Olympics. The No. 18 middleweight in the world according to the USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings, Lombard may be a bit underrated. He just hasn't gotten a crack at the best of the best. He'll face Alexander Shlemenko, who is 15-1 since 2007. Both guys are sluggers, so don't blink.
During Bellator's 115-pound women's tourney, Fujii (22-0) has certainly lived up to her lofty reputation. The submission specialist has blown threw her three American opponents in the tournament. She'll have to deal with the biggest fighter in the field to win the title. Zoila Frausto (9-1) cuts down from over 130 pounds to reach the 115 limit. If you're not a fan of female fighting, this one might change your mind. The fighters down at 115 are similar to the men at 155 and below. The pace is quick and there are no stamina issues.

UFC 120 is over and well, at least you didn't have to spend any of your hard-earned cash on that card. Some performances did stand out, and for that, they get a bright, shiny gold star.
No. 1 star -- Carlos Condit: Sometimes, the only way to shut a man up is to knock him out. Condit did just that, ending Dan Hardy's trash talk with a flush left hook in the first round. At least Hardy had no problem admitting why he lost, telling the crowd in London, "I got punched in the face." For the KO, Condit was awarded a $60,000 Knockout of the Night bonus.
No. 2 star -- Paul Sass: In his UFC debut, Sass slapped a tight triangle choke onto Mark Holst like he had done it many times before. That's because he has. Of Sass's 11 wins, eight have come by triangle choke. This won earned him an extra $60,000 for Submission of the Night.
No. 3 star -- Alexander Gustaffson: The Swedish fighter owned Cyrille Diabate in the first round, then finished the fight in the second round. He started with a rear naked choke, but when Diabate wouldn't tap, Gustaffson had the good sense to let go off the choke, throw a series of punches and then grab the choke again. After that, Diabate had no choice but to tap.

On this week's episode of "The Ultimate Fighter," we have one episode, but two fights. What does that mean? You'll have to read on to find out.
Good problem to have of the week: With their first win, Team Koscheck is stressed about how to pick the next fight. They see it as a bad but good situation.
Under your skin of the week: Team GSP is very upset by the way Team Koscheck has celebrated their win. Koscheck and the coaches stopped by and picked on Michael Johnson, who was clearly ticked off by it. Somehow, these fighters don't get that getting mad about it is exactly what Koscheck wants.
Voice of reason of the week: Georges St. Pierre sat his team down and told them not to let Team Koscheck's antics get under their skin. That makes sense ... so clearly, that advice won't be followed.
Trash talk guessing game No. 1 -- Who said:
I just go out there and kick and punch and knee.
I'm not like these other guys that he's fought.
I want him to feel pain.
First fight of the week: Cody McKenzie (Team GSP) vs. Marc Stevens (Team Koscheck)
Round 1: Stevens shoots in for a quick takedown and McKenzie sinks in his trademark guillotine. Stevens is put to sleep, and Koscheck is clearly disgusted.
After the fight, the Stevens locker room is dead silent. Koscheck had no explanation to offer his fighters, and they had to head in to the gym for the next fight announcement. Team GSP had control, and they put up their fighter Jonathan Brookins against Sevak Magakian. GSP calls Brookins his secret weapon. In case you're unfamiliar with Brookins' work -- which maybe GSP was -- he is one of the many fighters that Jose Aldo destroyed on the way to the WEC championship.
Stupid prank of the week: "Ahhh, Josh, where you put my sandals?" Koscheck hid GSP's sandals, which is the one of the weakest pranks in the history of "The Ultimate Fighter."
Trash talk guessing game No. 2 -- Who said:
I want to go up, like flowers to the sun.
This is like, win or die, man.
Second fight of the week: Jonathan Brookins (Team GSP) vs. Sevak Magakian (Team Koscheck)
Round 1: Brookins earned the first cheer of the fight when he supplexed Magakian down to the ground. Though Magakian stood up quickly, Brookins stayed on his back. After some maneuvering, he sunk in a standing rear naked choke and put Magakian to sleep.
Body count of the week: Two fights, two fighters put to sleep. Team GSP took both fights this week, leaving one last fight for Team Koscheck to try to dig out of the hole next week.
